The Situation

Fraudsters have become increasingly sophisticated in recent years, leaving companies and fraud managers struggling to keep up. Using IP and device data — and even purchasing complete stolen identity packages (i.e., someone’s personal information, credit card data, access to email accounts, etc.) — scammers are making it more difficult for companies to differentiate fraudulent transactions from genuine customer interaction. Additionally, the team desired a way to augment its non PII data collection without adding friction. The goal was getting more (and accurate) data by way of seamless implementation.

The Solution

Because our client had already seen so much success with Accertify Device Solution, fraud screening, machine learning models, and thirdparty tools, they made the decision to expand the partnership even further by implementing Accertify’s User Behavior Analytics (UBA).

Once they had updated some JavaScript on its site, the necessary information immediately began flowing to Accertify, where the implementation team quickly configured and activated the solution. Initially, they made use of the UBA data in silent mode — i.e., refraining from releasing the functionality to its manual review analysts until the team fully understood the outputs and their efficiency. The Accertify team stayed flexible and adapted their models when necessary.

Results

The results of Accertify’s UBA solution were both swift and substantial. Shortly after implementation, the Accertify team were alerted to the fact that very old devices were accessing new and unsupported browsers, a common issue affecting business.

Our client then had access to functionality that allows them to detect and understand how advanced fraudsters were at mimicking device information. The time people are spending on websites is a critical metric – fraudsters do not take as much time browsing as genuine consumers. In addition, when copy and paste is used to make a booking, this is very high-risk behavior (60% more likely to be fraud if there are more than 9 instances)1 whereas using autofill is positive (3 times less risky than not)2.

Since implementing Accertify’s UBA, our customer found that manual reviews decreased by 64%,3 with the false-positive rate falling to 30%4. This increased operational efficiency allowed the company to repurpose resourcing on other tasks, which was critical at a time when the business was growing.

The data also allowed them to take more chances on transactions which were difficult to tell if they were fraud vs. non-fraud and played a key role in the company’s effort to drive down rejected transactions, which has resulted in a 1.1%5 increase in order acceptance.
